I think I always knew that art was a process, but I struggled to have faith in that process. When I "messed up," I gave up. However, working with unfamiliar mediums and in different movements of art have consistently challenged my rigidity, and in 9 months, I feel that my self-proclaimed boundaries have been reformed significantly. I've learned to embrace mistakes and to remake accidents into intentional marks. While I was working on the Head portion of the...

Process Post: Non-Objective/Abstract Art

We began this unit by following the "Path of Abstraction," during which we explored methods of overcoming the boundaries of traditional art. This included automatic drawing, zooming in, simplifying, and others. I tend to struggle when I'm deprived of all restraints, because I always think the infiniteness of what is possible is terrifying. In contrast, gestural drawing felt like just enough freedom. The truth is, I'm working towards feeling comfortable in my autonomy, and I believe that this...

Artist Awareness: Yoshitomo Nara

Yoshitomo Nara b. UI denotes user interface, and UX denotes user experience. In short, UI/UX designers are responsible for not only determining the visual qualities of a digital product or service but also the user's experience while navigating the tool. Just to get it out of the way, UI/UX designers, according to Indeed, make a base salary of about $113,000 in the United States,...

Process Post: Oil Painting Part 2

I've attached several images. Unfortunately, I did not get a chance to take a photo of the finished painting, as I was quite engrossed in making the most of the little studio time we had (and yes, one of my biggest regrets from this project remains not finding time outside of class to fully refine this piece). What I have attached below include the last bit of the grisaille underpainting, which I was extremely pleased with, and perhaps one studio day's worth of layering with color. I don't...

Process Post: Oil Painting

I've never painted indirectly before. Actually, I wasn't even aware that it was a popular method of oil-painting. All of a sudden, the turpentine that I had been using solely to correct misplaced brush strokes, sketch loosely, and clean my brushes became a far more significant instrument in the orchestra that was painting. I must admit, however, that I am quite enjoying it. I'm reminded somewhat of watercolor painting, which was really my second love (after pencil, of course). We began with...

Process Post: Still-Life Arrangement/Thumbnails/Underdrawing

To be honest, I've never been the kind of person who seriously implemented principles of composition in my work. I've always had some vague sense of space and shape, but I have also always been more eager to begin the actual process of drawing. In this way, the process of arranging a still-life for this project has been quite different. Simultaneously, it was necessary for my development as an artist. There are elements in composition that I had disregarded before; I now recognize these...

Self Portrait in Clay

Our second major project this year was a self portrait in clay. I'm not quite sure if I achieved acceptable likeliness. What really bothers me is the shape of the face. I think I may've underestimated the length of my mid-face, and so, the features are more compressed than they should be. The eyes are too low, and the mouth is too high, but I feel that at the very least, if this clay sculpture really does outlive me and is all that is left of my image, I would not be too ashamed. It's not...

Artist Copy Process

No, I did not spawn into this assignment with the image on the left. Rather, it was a long (and grueling) process which involved a good handful of eraser shavin gs and several hours of doubling over the floor in the last stretch. This is Annibale Carracci's Naaktstudie van een zittende man, op de rug gezien . Here's that semi-interesting journey articulated into a blog post: Final Copy Here's the contour.
