End of July Update

I took a splendidly long time just to make this much progress.

Then I learned a new technique, which helped me work much faster with charcoal, a medium I've rarely worked with before, and I remembered just how vital mastery of one's tools is!

I'm not so confident in the resemblance between these faces and my own, but there's an odd charm in that too. I keep thinking of hydras from the Greek myths. I suppose this drawing isn't half as epic as those legends.

Anyhow, I didn't start this piece with any vision of how I wanted the final work to look. I kept myself receptive to all sources of inspiration as I worked.

In the end, I drew a fracturing clock. It felt "right," although I couldn't even put into words what the effect I was hoping for was. Thinking of hydras led to chimeras, another mythological beast with the head of a lion, the body of a goat, and the tail of a snake. Metaphorically and more broadly, the chimera represents an impossible dream.

My impossible dream is the reclaiming of time.
